I am a researcher and educator with more than 25 years experience in telecommunications, computing and IT, especially in Internet technologies, security and privacy, mobile and wireless communications, distributed systems and formal methods.
I have held multiple academic leadership roles at CQUniversity. I am currently Associate Dean - Work Integrated Learning in the School of Engineering and Technology (SET), leading the internship, work placement and cadetship offerings across Engineering, IT, Project Management, Construction Management and Aviation courses. Prior to this I was Head of Course for the Master of IT and Master of IS courses, successfully leading the courses through accreditation by the Australian Computer Society (ACS). I have contributed to the growth of the School via involvement in the recruitment of 20+ academics, direct supervision of 30+ academics, and managing teaching workload of around 40 full-time and 80 casual staff.
As a teaching scholar, I have initiated and led activities to improve ICT course outcomes including: the rollout of specialist networking labs across six campuses; incorporating collaborative technologies in group work, e.g., Teams and GitHub; introducing Microsoft Learn on Demand and Azure cloud into multiple units; benchmarking units and students against industry-led skills frameworks, including the NIST NICE Workforce Framework for Cybersecurity; and enhancing practices for continuous review of units, including Complex Computing from the Seoul Accord, SFIA and the ACS Core Body of Knowledge. I have delivered around 15 undergraduate and postgraduate units on-campus and online, including developing the majority of content (lectures, tutorials, quiz question banks, videos, assessments) for 6 of those units. My teaching activities have been recognised by students (e.g., Student Voice Award) and colleagues (e.g., Excel award nomination, use of content in their units), and shared globally via two free 200+ page books (Networking and Security in Linux and Cryptography Study Notes), YouTube videos and GitHub repositories.
At CQUniversity I have been Chief Investigator on research grants totalling more than $1.7 million, covering fields of quantum technologies, security and privacy, and digital health. I have published papers and advised PhD and Masters students in: AI for cyber security; blockchain for privacy; security in the Internet-of-Things and sensor networks; privacy enhancing technologies for cloud computing and 5G collaborative communications. Prior to CQUniversity I have conducted funded and published research in areas such as: vehicular communications; security analysis of network protocols; mobile ad-hoc and wireless networks; and performance and functional analysis of Internet protocols.
