About Me

I am the Senior Lecturer of Home Economics in the College of Education, School of Education and The Arts, where I support pre-service Home Economics teachers’ Professional Practice by employing authentic, positive and productive pedagogies and assessments. I received my doctoral qualification for cross-cultural spiritual health and well-being and home economics research from Griffith University, Australia. My specialist interests are Home Economics philosophy and ideology, spiritual health and well-being, sustainable development and active "glocal" citizenship.

Before becoming a registered teacher in 2009, I owned a small business, "Leopard Spots: Changing Your Impossible", which was an organiser service for small home-based businesses. I also had 16 years of experience working as an executive assistant in law firms and property development in Brisbane. I am one of 14 educators within my immediate and extended family. After working in the public and private sectors for many years, it was inevitable that I also entered the teaching profession.

I am a Home Economics advocate and administer the social network HomeEcConnect. I have published several papers and book chapters, regularly present professional development workshops, and speak at national and international conferences. I am an accredited International Professional Home Economist (IPHE) and Executive Committee member of the International Federation for Home Economics (IFHE).

What does Home Economics mean to me?

I am a Home Economist. I am also a mother, sister, daughter, global citizen and researcher – but most importantly – I am me. Home economics makes clear the roles that I am responsible for in society. My home economics education has enhanced my skills for making important everyday decisions and enlightened me on how and why my choices impact me, my family, my friends, my communities, and my Earth. I have come to understand that “everyday life” is a spiritual journey and home economics a spiritual pursuit. Home economics helps me to participate in life with an authentic and realistic perspective. I believe my profession is so important; I am committed to learning more and teaching others how valuable home economics can be. My advocacy role is to change public perceptions about Home Economics, one person at a time.

HomeEcConnect: The art and science of home economics connects essential knowledges

Home economics is an art and a science. Since its inception over 150 years ago, home economics has used scientific knowledge to inform safe, efficient and effective home management practices. The art of home economics comes from a treasure trove of artistic and creative skills acquired when learning and teaching in this field. Our professionals are multi-skilled. Home economics uniquely combines interdisciplinary knowledge focused on "the home" to inform individuals, families and communities about healthy, sustainable and ethical ways to live quality lives.

The purpose of HomeEcConnect is to bring together home economics students, teachers and professionals worldwide to work collaboratively, be inspired and take action on local and global (or "glocal") issues that affect the everyday lives of individuals, families and communities while respecting culture, diversity and our common Earth home with all its creatures, land, air and water. HomeEcConnect promotes the valuable everyday contributions of home economics towards optimal and sustainable futures for all, founded on shared ethical frameworks and guidance from the International Federation for Home Economics, The Earth Charter, and the United Nations' SDGs.
