About Me

I began my career in education as a primary school teacher but have worked in a range of contexts including work as a Learning Support teacher and Secondary Drama and English teacher.

I have been employed at CQUniversity since 2000 beginning my work here teaching the Drama electives and Arts curriculum course in the Bachelor of Learning Management. I played an integral role in the development of the Bachelor of Education course which commenced delivery in 2014 to align with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and served as the Head of Course for the primary degree from 2011 to 2016. Since that time I have been appointed as the Academic Director of Professional Practice to facilitate effective professional experience placements for preservice teachers.

I have a particular interest in literacy teaching and learning and have been involved in research projects with a focus on reading comprehension for middle school students. My doctoral research is in this area.

I am an experienced teacher having completed over 30 years of service in Queensland schools.  I worked as a practising teacher while completing casual contracts at the university prior to accepting full-time employment in the field of teacher education.

Universities Studied At

My undergraduate study was completed at James Cook University.  Since that time I have completed postgraduate studies in Speech and Drama, a Masters degree majoring in Special Education with the University of Southern Queensland and a Doctor of Education with CQUniversity.

Universities Worked At

My work in higher education has been completed at CQUniversity Australia, commencing in 2000.

I have received national awards for my teaching including University Lecturer of the Year along with qualifying as a finalist for three consecutive years.

As the developer of a Literacy project for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, initiated under the Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program (HEPPP), I was nominated for an OPAL award and named as a finalist for the work which focused on improving the reading comprehsnion outcomes of middle years readers.
