With a professional mantra of evidence-based best practice, Dr. Malcolm Johnson is a practitioner academic, with a robust background in commercial business planning, turnarounds, business start-ups, and organisational change.

A Distinguished Principal Research Fellow - Human Capital with The Conference Board (New York) www.conference-board.org and Member of the Expert Panel, The Tertiary Qualification and Standards Agency (TEQSA) www.teqsa.gov.au, Malcolm has influenced thought, provided strategies and led or contributed to change at universities and in the private sector. These include: University of Queensland Business School, UQ Faculty of Biological and Chemical Sciences, Griffith University, and Australian Institute of Management (AIM).

Complementary to academic practices, Malcolm has also been actively pursuing improvements in business practices for the past two decades. Over time, he has provided many innovative and pragmatic solutions to issues confronting his clients. Malcolm has also established, grown and driven consultancy businesses that have consistently succeeded in the face of exceptionally difficult local and global financial conditions.

Riverside Marine Pty Ltd / Fantasea Cruises Pty Ltd

Proposed venture in marine eco-tourism for the Whitsunday Region

Evaluation of market potential to launch an experiential marine research/eco-tourism business within Riverside Marine’s subsidiary Fantasea Cruises; National Geographic have subsequently launched a similar cruise operation. The proposal examined how to leverage Fantasea’s substantial marine infrastructure with the excitement of field research to be undertaken in joint venture with local and international universities. The business plan also sought to leverage relevant government initiatives including the R&D tax incentives, ARC Linkage Grants and the Export Market Development Scheme.

Preparation of a Business Plan for an innovative financial product that provides loyalty rewards for people investing in Superannuation. The product received ASIC approval and has recently achieved international and Australian process patents.
