Dr Peter McKenzie is a Senior Lecturer and Head of Music at the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM). With over 15 years of experience teaching woodwind, improvisation, music theory, and pedagogy in the tertiary sector, Peter is recognised for his expertise in curriculum development and his deep commitment to regional music education. He has played a pivotal role in developing music education initiatives across Queensland and the Northern Territory, focusing on fostering inclusivity and engagement for neuro-diverse students through innovative programs and community outreach.

Peter has been recognised for his teaching excellence with awards such as the Student Voice Award for Educator of the Year (2017) and the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Exemplary Practice in Learning and Teaching (2021). From 2025–2026, Peter has been appointed to the Queensland Advisory Committee to the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) and also serves as a board member of the Commission for the Education of the Professional Musician (CEPROM).

A versatile saxophonist, Peter’s performance career spans classical, jazz, and contemporary genres. He has performed extensively across Australia and the USA, sharing the stage with artists including James Morrison, Bob Franceschini, Vince Jones, Guy Sebastian, Katie Noonan, and The Idea of North to name a few.

Peter’s research focuses on music education, technology, and regional community initiatives, emphasising fostering inclusivity, enhancing social engagement, and supporting cultural and personal development. Building on this research, he has developed innovative teaching approaches, including an online contemporary music theory curriculum tailored for regional and remote students. Peter also supervises Master’s and PhD students in Creative Practice and Music Education, mentoring the next generation of educators and practitioners.
