Peter McKenzie is a music academic and researcher in the field of jazz and contemporary music at CQUniversity. Since 2009, Peter has taught undergraduate level saxophone and clarinet, jazz improvisation, music theory, history as well as music pedagogy units. Peter also coordinated the Principal Music Studios one-one tuition program with the Bachelor of Music for 10 years. As a music academic, Peter has developed course and unit content including the design and implementation of several music theory units and instrument curricula within the Bachelor of Music course. In 2017, Peter was awarded the Student Voice Award for "Educator of the Year". As a performer, Peter is an accomplished woodwind specialist and his experience extends through many musical styles including classical, jazz and contemporary music. He has performed in Australia and throughout the USA with a number of major artists including Don Rader, Bob Reynolds, Victor Wooten, David Liebman, James Morrison, Bob Franceschini, Wilbur Wilde, Vince Jones, Guy Sebastian, Tania Kernaghan, John Riley, David Baker, James Sherlock, Mike Price, Katie Noonan and The Idea of North to name a few.
Peter completed his Masters in Learning and Teaching specialising in beginner jazz improvisation. The research investigated the suitability of current compositions (improvisational vehicles) and teaching methods. Peter has travelled throughout Australia, delivering workshops to students and teachers on how to approach improvisation from a variety of musical backgrounds.
Peter completed his PhD on the development of regional jazz communities in Australia. This research investigated how two regional cities in North Queensland developed and sustained their jazz communities from diverse performance, sociological, educational and governmental factors.
