About Me

Dr. Saiful Islam obtained a PhD degree in Construction and Project Management from Queensland University of Technology (QUT)- Australia. He has an MSc degree in Construction Engineering and Management from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), Saudi Arabia, and a B.Sc. (Engg.) degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Bangladesh. His Ph.D. project was on modeling cost overrun risks in power plant projects. He has published more than 20 research papers in some leading Construction Management journals and conferences proceedings. He supervised some postgraduate and many undergraduate students. He is a reviewer of some leading journals, including the Journal of Civil Engineering and Management, International Journal of Construction Management, etc. Before joining CQU, he worked as an Assistant Professor in Construction Engineer and Management at KFUPM, Saudi Arabia, for a year. He also worked as a faculty of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Bangladesh, for almost 13 years. He is a project management consultant and serving the industry for 14 years without compromising his academic duties.

General
Background

Dr. Saiful is both an academic and a professional civil engineer with a particular focus on construction project management. He teaches construction project management courses and does research in this field. His current research focuses on risk and uncertainty assessment for realistic budgeting and scheduling for megaprojects, including but not limited to the power plant, oil and gas projects. He worked as a Principal Investigator of two funded projects. Beyond his academic duties, he worked as a consultant of many civil engineering projects under the Center for Research Testing and Consultancy (CRTC) of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of SUST. He has also been working as an independent consultant of privately funded building projects. His expertise extends to cost estimation and management, project scheduling, risk and uncertainty management, and decision analysis under uncertain project environment.

One year full-time work experience as a Project Engineering supervising a large building construction project; about a decade to serve the community as a Project Management consultant providing various services, for instance, project cost estimation, planning and scheduling, project risk assessment and management, construction supervision, service performance assessment and structural quality assessment of existing buildings etc.

Member of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB). Membership no. 24502.

Professional Interests

Dr. Islam is interested to supervise postgraduate research students. He is accepting postgraduate research students from home and abroad. He is also keen to make research collaboration with the researchers align to his research areas. 

Consultancy Work

Intended to serve the community through various consultancy works including decision analysis under uncertain and critical project environment; risk assessment; project performance analysis etc.
