About Me

General

Background

After a career of over thirty years teaching mathematics in a range of executive positions in nine NSW secondary schools. After completing two master’s degrees in education and educational leadership, in 2014, I began a Master of Research (MRes) at Macquarie University in Sydney and in 2015 I made a decision to leave school teaching and focus fulltime on my university studies. The results of my MRes thesis have been published in the MERJ (Mathematics Education Research Journal), the citation is given below. After completing the MRes, I began my PhD at Macquarie University in 2016, which I completed in 2019. By combining my insights and experiences as a mathematics teacher with the current research in mathematics education, I conducted a research study which furthered the work done in the MRes and grounded in my beliefs of how mathematics should be taught. I developed a teaching framework for all teachers of mathematics that involves teachers’ awareness about communicating mathematics, by noticing their own and their students’ thinking. The result is my PhD thesis titled “Preservice teachers noticing of structural thinking in mathematics”. At CQU I am a lecturer in mathematics education for the Bachelor of Education (primary) degree and writing and coordinating the new Master of Educational Leadership course on the Be Different platform.
