Jan Cattoni is passionate about the importance of storytelling and its capacity to bring positive change to people's lives. Jan's professional career spans several disciplines including filmmaker, academic and paediatric intensive care nurse. Jan has woven these disciplines into a kind of hybrid career in ethical filmmaking, often working with vulnerable individuals and marginalised communities. Jan’s broadcast credits are as a writer director of short drama, documentary, and factual series for ABC, SBS and RTE (Ireland). After moving back to north Queensland, a decade ago, Jan has worked in many remote communities co-creating content for community and broadcast organisations, and mentoring emerging creators. In these environments, Jan has been able to explore participative filmmaking, collaborative scripting, and creative responses to complex issues. This work has attracted numerous awards. Jan's research interests are in creative practice research, and she is currently a Chief Researcher on the ARC Discovery Project, Future Stories, co-creating virtual worlds with young people in hospital. Jan is the lead of the Creative Arts Research Training Academy and a member of CREATE. Jan teaches into the Bachelor of Digital Media Screen Production Minor on the Cairns campus and is a member of Screen Queensland's, North Queensland Screen Advisory Committee.
