Before joining CQUniversity in June 2018, Dr. Poon worked at RMIT University (2016-2018) and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (1999-2016).
Dr. Poon has a diverse range of research interests, including software engineering (particularly software testing); spreadsheet testing; computer science/IT education; end user computing; e-commerce; and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. He has published in top-tier venues, including IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering (TSE), IEEE Transactions on Reliability, IEEE Transactions on Education, ACM Transactions on Software Engineering & Methodology (TOSEM), ACM Computing Surveys, Communications of the ACM (CACM); and Knowledge-Based Systems.
Dr. Poon has served as a Reviewer for various journals such as IEEE Transactions on Reliability; IEEE Transactions on Education, Decision Support Systems; Journal of Systems & Software; Software: Practice & Experience; Information & Software Technology; International Journal of Information Management; Software Testing, Verification & Reliability; and IET Software. He has also served as a Guest Editor for two special issues of the Journal of Systems & Software, and is on the editorial review board of the Journal of Organizational & End User Computing, the International Journal of Information Systems & Supply Chain Management, and the Journal of Information Systems Education. Furthermore, he served in the editorial board of the ISACA Journal: The Source for IT Governance Professionals (formerly Information Systems Control Journal).
In 2020, Dr. Poon has successfully secured a research grant (US$ 50,000) from Facebook Research. The topic of this research grant is "Identify Metamorphic Relations for Testing Web-Enabled Simulation Systems", under the funding scheme "Agent-based User Interaction Simulation to Find and Fix Integrity and Privacy Issues". This prestigious grant is highly competitive. According to Facebook Research's website, many previous awards recipients came from highly prestigious U.S. and U.K. institutions such as MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, Chicago, UC Berkeley, CalTech, Columbia, Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, Rutgers, Dartmouth, Oxford, University College London, and Imperial College London, among others.
