About Me

Jeremy is an environmental economist, with strong research interests in sustainability, natural resource management and geographic information systems. Jeremy applies non-market valuation techniques (stated and revealed preference methods) to explore community preferences for a range of agricultural, environmental and resource/energy-related policies. He is also particularly interested in valuing environmental assets, ecosystem services and biodiversity. Since he joined CQUniversity in 2016, he has led or been actively involved in over $3M in research projects related to a large variety of topics, including cost-benefit analyses, ecological indicators, economic report cards, food waste, decarbonisation, regional development, environmental impact assessment, recreation and tourism, environmental standards, credence factors, consumer preferences, food, water quality and Great Barrier Reef management policies. In 2022, Jeremy became Research Theme Leader for Rural and Regional Economies as part of CQU's Centre for Regional Economies and Supply Chains (CRESC). Jeremy currently works in Brisbane as part of Prof. John Rolfe's Applied Economics Research Group. Since December 2019, he is also affiliated with CMERC, CQU's Coastal Marine Ecosystems Research Centre based in Gladstone. Jeremy is an active member of the Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES) and the President of the AARES Queensland Branch. He is also an active referee, having reviewed more than 200 manuscripts for over 40 international academic journals and multiple international conferences over the past few years.

General
Background

Jeremy completed his undergraduate degree in Bioscience Engineering - Agriculture Engineering in 2006 and his MSc in Bioscience Engineering - Nature, Water and Forest Management in 2008 at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech, University of Liège, Belgium. During his final Masters year, Jeremy obtained a merit-based Erasmus grant to undertake a Double-degree program at Cranfield University, United Kingdom, where he completed a second MSc degree in Land Management - Natural Resource Management in 2008. Jeremy was awarded Cranfield’s Keech Trophy Award 2009 for the Best Student in Natural Resource Management and Ecological Conservation Options of the MSc Land Management Course, Cranfield University, UK.

Jeremy's enthusiasm for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) pushed him into working for 2 years in the GIS industry. He then decided to keep pursuing his dream to become an environmental scientist by completing a PhD on the valuation and mapping of cultural ecosystem services in 2015 at KU Leuven, Belgium, before moving to Brisbane, Australia. Jeremy's background is consequently a mix of GIS, environmental sciences, agriculture/forest engineering and economics.
