About Me

 My key passions are teaching postgrad students in the creative industries, and maintaining an active practice in the visual arts.
I very strongly believe in the life-changing power of education and I particularly enjoy working with students who are first in family in tertiary education, as well as students who doubt their capacity to reach their goals. Supporting such students is especially rewarding when they complete their studies and can reflect on the opportunities this has created for them.
In my art practice, I primarily work in the field of printmaking, with a focus on narrative work that reflects on life stories and memoir. There’s something I love about the integration of text with images.
I have a key interest in research methodology for the creative industries, particularly practice-based research and autoethnography.

Previous teaching

Current: National Head of Postgraduate Studies, JMC Academy

My current position as the National Head of Postgraduate Studies at JMC Academy, Brisbane campus draws on my previous experience both as a university lecturer and as a visual arts practitioner. I have supervised the work of students across a range of disciplines, including film and television, music, game design, 2D and 3D animation, audio production and more.

  • Co-ordinating Master of Creative Industries program at JMC Brisbane campus.
  • Supervising and managing team of 9 postgraduate teaching staff and liaising with campus management.
  • Member, Learning & Teaching Committee
  • Member, Academic Board
  • Member, Curriculum Development and Course Design Committee
  • Development of course content.
  • Thesis supervisor for final semester Masters students.
  • Reviewing unit outlines and assessment tasks for current MCI units.
  • Liaising with Brisbane-based MCI students, including organisation of events to encourage a sense of cohesion amongst the cohort.
  • Creating content for MCI units.
  • Delivery of lectures and seminars to MCI students across all three JMC campuses (live hybrid delivery).

2016 - 2022: Lecturer, Honours program, Department of Creative Arts and Digital Design - University of Canberra (in partnership with TAFE Qld, South Bank Campus)

In my role as Lecturer and Supervisor in the Honours program from January 2020, I developed curriculum content for Honours students with majors in visual arts, music, fashion, acting and game design. I was also the Principal Supervisor for six visual arts Honours students, with results of 3 students achieving First Class Honours and 3 achieving Second Class, 1st degree Honours. I have strong skills in practice-led research and in assisting students to develop their literature review.In this position as lecturer for the creative industries degree program at TAFE Queensland, South Bank (Brisbane) campus, I drew on my past experience both as a university lecturer and as a visual arts practitioner. The delivery of this degree is a partnership with the University of Canberra, and graduating students are awarded a Bachelor of Visual Arts from the University of Canberra.

Prior to my transfer to Brisbane at the beginning of 2020, I was based at Nambour campus since 2016, where I was instrumental in setting up the new Bachelor studio on this campus, including floor plan discussions and identifying equipment required.

In 2017, this degree was delivered using Moodle as the content management system. In 2018, the University of Canberra changed to Canvas. I am familiar with both systems as a skilled user and content creator.

In early 2019, I established ‘The Tower Gallery’ as a dedicated on-campus exhibition space for visual arts students (both for degree and diploma program students) and have developed an exhibition program as a teaching tool to enhance my students’ learning outcomes.

2014 to 2016: Course Convenor and Lecturer, Graduate Certificate in Creative Industries - Central Queensland University, Noosa Campus.

As lecturer in the School of Education and the Arts at CQU, I was responsible for the Postgraduate Certificate in Creative Industries program. This role included developing content for the course Moodle site, for which I authored original content. This site was accessed by both internal and external students.

Prior to 2014, students enrolled in the course communicated directly with the lecturer on an individual basis, and there was no engagement with the course Moodle site. From Semester 1 of 2015, students began engaging regularly with the course Moodle sites. Over 80% of students posted weekly on the General Discussion Forum. Furthermore, major goals were achieved by engaging distance students, thus initiating conversations relating to their work and their learning experiences. The course evaluation completions across all units of this course rose to approximately 80%, and this level of engagement continued throughout the period of my employment.

Creating community interest in this course was a significant KPI that I achieved through outreach programs, engagement with the media, as well as extra curricula activities that were open to all members of the community. As a direct result of these community engagement initiatives, a significant number of now students successfully enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Creative Industries.

Feedback from students commenting on my teaching skills has been overwhelmingly positive and I was awarded the CQU Student Voice Certificate of Commendation in recognition of my achievement in gaining an overall very high level of satisfaction as unit co-ordinator for two post-graduate units.

An additional role during this position was as Assistant Supervisor for Masters Students enrolled in the Master of Arts (Fine Arts).

2012 to 2017: Lecturer and Tutor, Bachelor of Digital Media - Central Queensland University, Noosa Campus.

My responsibilities in this position drew on my skills as an experienced professional in the field of digital media. This experience includedpublication of my professional illustration work in reputable magazines and journals, freelance design work for book and record covers, book typesetting for a number of boutique publishers, creating and maintaining websites for a wide range of small businesses, as well as writing and designing newsletters for various not-for-profit organisations.

I have taught a range of units for the Bachelor of Digital Media program (previously the Bachelor of Multimedia Studies), including:Communication in Professional Contexts; Digital Publishing; Contemporary Photomedia; Foundations of Animation; User Experience Design; Digital Design and Communication; Desktop Publishing; Foundations of Animation; Design Perspectives; Illustration and Visualisation; Interactive Animation for Games.

2014 to 2016: Volunteer Curator and Director, CQUniversity Noosa Art Space - Central Queensland University, Noosa Campus.

The CQU Noosa Art Space was set up as an integrated learning resource for Creative Industries students in 2014. I established this space in an under-utilised foyer as a joint initiative with Professor Donna Lee Brien. Operating on a negligible budget, the space serveda resource for post-grad Creative Industries students to exhibit their work. The student works exhibited to date have included visual arts, as well as jewellery design, music composition and music production, creative writing and film.

As the gallery program developed, I was able to invite external artists to submit exhibition proposals. Through this development, the art space facilitated maintaining connections with alumni and bringing awareness about the CQUni Noosa campus to the broader community.

I secured and curated exhibitions by two international artists, and numerous proposals from local artists as well as students both past and present were submitted. The exhibition openings were very well attended by the Noosa community and the Art Space proved to be a very positive marketing tool for CQU Noosa campus. The exhibition opening events received positive coverage in the local press.

My duties in this role included:

  • Initial establishment of Art Space, including overseeing renovations;
  • Creating and maintaining a dedicated website for the Art Space;
  • Coordination of the exhibition calendar;
  • Curation of exhibitions (including hanging of works), arrange signage for each exhibition, design invitations, prepare catalogues;
  • Publicity and media.
