About Me
Dr Bijay Dhungel joined CQUniversity in 2026 as a Senior Lecturer in Laboratory Medicine. Prior to this appointment, he served as a Senior Research Officer at the Centenary Institute and as an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney.
Dr Dhungel received his PhD from The University of Queensland, an MSc from the University of Eastern Finland, and a Bachelor of Technology from Acharya Nagarjuna University.
His research spans cellular and molecular biology, with particular emphasis on virology, gene and molecular therapies, viral vector engineering, and cancer biology. His work has generated significant academic and commercial outputs, including peer‑reviewed publications, competitive research funding, and a patent.
Dr Dhungel is internationally recognised for his seminal discovery of a novel virus receptor, published in the high‑impact journal Cell. He has attracted over AUD 4 million in competitive research funding as a Chief Investigator or Co‑Chief Investigator, including two NHMRC Ideas grants, MRFF CUREator funding, and Therapeutic Innovation Australia (TIA) voucher support.
He is a patent holder in virus receptor technology and a co‑founder of the gene therapy startup AAVec Bio, which aims to translate fundamental biological discoveries into therapeutic applications.
In addition to his research activities, Dr Dhungel contributes to teaching in Immunology and Genomic Pathology.
