Tim Carey

Professor Timothy (Tim) Carey is the Director, Centre for Health Equity in Regional and Remote Communities at CQUniversity. Previously he held the position of Chair Country Health Research and Innovation at Curtin University and, in this role, led an Alliance between Curtin University and the Western Australia Country Health Service. He was also the Director of Flinders University’s Centre for Remote Health in Alice Springs and the Andrew Weiss Chair in Research on Global Health and inaugural Director of the Institute of Global Health Equity Research at the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda. 

Tim is a senior Australian academic and Fulbright Scholar who has combined clinical practice with research and university teaching and training throughout his career. He is passionate about the contribution academics can make to society by asking questions, solving problems, and disrupting the status quo. 

Tim has served as a Director on the Boards of the Australian Psychological Society (APS), the Australian Rural Health Education Network, Violence Prevention Australia, and the Global Implementation Society. In his role as Board Director of the APS he led the development of, and delivered, a landmark Apology to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians on behalf of the APS at the 2016 APS Congress.

Tim emphasises impact and engagement in all his research activity. He has over 175 publications including books, book chapters, and journal articles with some being translated into other languages including Italian, Dutch, Spanish, and Korean. Two of his recent books are "Patient-Perspective Care: A new paradigm for health systems and services" and "Deconstructing Health Inequity: A Perceptual Control Theory perspective" (co-authored with Tai and Griffiths). Tim was also co-editor of the Springer text "Handbook of Rural, Remote, and very Remote Mental Health". He also prioritises engaging with the public to make psychological knowledge and expertise accessible. He has a blog on Psychology Today called “In Control” which has more than 1.57 million views. Tim also contributes to social media as well as television and radio. In 2017 he was selected to be one of three medical experts who appeared on the popular SBS Series “How Mad Are You?” which screened in 2018 and 2019.

Tim has pioneered clinical initiatives such as “Patient-Perspective Care” and “Patient-Led Appointment Scheduling” as well as a population health resource in the form of a smartphone app called "MindSurf". He is strongly committed to advancing the way in which social sciences can help to improve community health and wellbeing particularly in rural, remote, and underserved areas. His fundamental mission is to contribute usefully to initiatives that seek to understand and improve the extent to which people are able to live the life they want.
