Head of College - Business-674559
School of Business and Law
About Me

Stuart has over 30 years’ experience as an academic across four tertiary institutions – Massey University, QUT, UniSQ and currently CQUniversity. Experiences gained include teaching, researching, and mentoring academic; Course and Program Co-ordinator; extended periods of time as Acting Head of School – Accountancy; QUT Business School Director of Studies; Deputy Head of School / Acting Head of School and Dean – Business at UniSQ; and currently Head of College – Business at CQUniversity. In these roles he has gained and demonstrates experience in managing academic teams, Learning & Teaching and research policies, procedures and programs, recruitment, financial budgets, external accreditation, and change management initiatives to name a few. Stuart’s leadership vision is to provide senior leadership that demonstrates a personal and professional commitment to:

  • Open and respectful communication,
  • nurturing a collegial and dedicated team culture that embraces excellence and acknowledges and draws on the strengths of diversity,
  • encouraging collaboration and fostering an environment where proactively rather than reactivity is strongly encouraged and supported, and
  • meaningful internal and external stakeholder engagement in support of the University and School of Business and Law’s mission.

Stuart has a diverse and competent teaching portfolio (primarily in the broad ‘financial accounting’ domain) traversing undergraduate, postgraduate, and corporate/executive education. His teaching philosophy reflects a flexible and adaptive facilitator approach in support of extending student learning beyond real-world discipline knowledge by encouraging students to develop broader life-long competencies that promote independent learning, problem solving and social awareness. Stuart is an experienced HDR supervisor with 9 PhD supervision completions and has been an external PhD thesis examiner for 12 candidates studying through other national and international universities. During his tenure at QUT, Stuart was recognised as a higher degree research mentoring supervisor.

Stuart’s research is underpinned by a personal belief that research should lead to a more informed understanding of the phenomenon being investigated and when appropriate provide a catalyst for change leading to improvement. His primary research focus is on issues pertaining to accountability and/or decision-usefulness traversing all sectors. As a senior academic he demonstrates strong engagement in the support, encouragement, and nurturing of colleagues less experienced and confident in their research journey – often extending beyond his own area of research interest. He has 26 refereed international and national journal publications, in addition to non-refereed journal publications/working papers/national and international conference presentations.

Stuart is a member of CPA Australia (FCPA) and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA) and a past member of the Queensland Divisional Council of CPA Australia. Prior to commencing his academic career, Stuart gained work experience in the banking and horticulture industries, and in tax audit and policy.
