About Me

I am currently employed as an Associate Professor in the Queensland Centre for Domestic and Family Violence Research. I have been a practitioner/academic social worker for 40 years. My experience includes 17 years university teaching (at QUT, UQ, ACU and UNE) and 23 years as a practitioner in the government (Child Health and Child Safety) and community sectors (Lifeline and UnitingCare Community). My teaching and publications have been in the areas of domestic and family violence, child protection, social work, child and family practice, counselling, and group work. My social work masters and doctorial research focused on the impact of domestic violence on children and their mother’s parenting, as well as children’s perceptions of domestic violence and was the earliest Australian research in this field. I am passionate about child advocacy, early intervention, family support and public health approaches to family violence as well as trauma-informed and narrative approaches to practice. My interests also include professional supervision and the 'use of self' and the 'wounded healer' in professional practice. In 2002, while employed as the Director of the Child Advocacy service at the Royal Children's Hospital, I was a successful recipient of a Creswick Fellowship in Family Relations and Child Development which enabled me to undertake further studies at the Kempe Centre, Denver Children's Hospital and Primary Children's Hospital, Salt Lake City. My ORCID ID is: https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4647-7958

General
Background

I have published in national and international refereed journals and books, presented research and practice-based papers at national and international conferences, and mentored practitioners and new academic staff to undertake similar tasks . My research experience includes quantitative and qualitative methods, program evaluation, longitudinal data collection, analysis of historical data records, research with vulnerable groups (children and women who have experienced domestic and/or sexual abuse) and research with male perpetrators of sexual violence. In professional practice I have had leadership and supervision roles where I have supported individuals and teams to implement practice reforms and undertake clinical and evaluation research and presentations.  My teaching experience includes both practice and university settings. For example, I was a member of the Family CARE Nurse Home Visitation statewide training team while employed at Queensland Health. I have delivered professional education on counselling and research methods with children as well training in family support (e.g., stages of change, motivational interviewing and client-directed, out-come informed counselling) while employed in the non-government sector.
