I am a Senior Lecturer in Criminology, and a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society. I have broad range of interdisciplinary research interests that span criminology and psychology. I am a critical psychologist with specialist areas of interest including gender, social justice, inequalities, LGBTQI+ issues, feminism, community, subculture, sexualities, and the digital world. I am also interested in qualitative research methods, especially phenomenology and experiential research, and the use of innovative data collection techniques. My doctoral research, completed in 2012, examined the lived experiences of participating in consensual Bondage, Discipline, Dominance & Submission, and Sadism & Masochism (BDSM).
I have published in the areas of sexualities, particularly marginalised sexual cultures, subculture, gendered violence, social media, gender inequalities, women’s wellbeing, and activism. I am editor of the British Psychological Society's Psychology of Women & Equalities Review, a biannual publication focusing on increasing awareness and action around gender and inequality issues.
I am a critical, interdisciplinary psychologist, with various theoretical perspectives influencing my work. I have a broad range of research interests and I have a record of research excellence, along with a wealth of experience in leading and delivering teaching and learning. I have completed a postgraduate certificate in Academic Practice, and I have been program leader for various undergraduate and Professional Doctorate courses. My research and pedagogy encompasses ideas from a range of disciplines including psychology, criminology, sociology and cultural studies, and I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I am a graduate of the Aurora Leadership in Higher Education program for women.
After 10 years at Manchester Metropolitan University, I began working at CQUniversity as a Senior Lecturer in Criminology in December 2019, based at the Brisbane campus.

As a critical psychologist working in the context of criminology, I have developed a broad range of research interests. I am particularly interested in the intersections between gender, sexuality, social justice, and equity. Other specialist areas of interest include critical criminology, particularly queer and feminist criminology, violence, wellbeing, feminism and LGBTQI+ communities. Recent work includes developing video resources for women to help them safely navigate dating apps in partnership with the North Queensland Women's Legal Service (NQWLS) on behalf of the Office of Justice and Attorney-General, and working with colleagues on behalf of the British Psychological Society to examine the UK government's consultation on preventing violence against women and girls. Other recent work includes research around lived experiences of embodiment and sexual cultures.
