Dr Abunada obtained his PhD degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Cambridge University- UK. His research focused on sustainable materials for remediation and contaminated land management. His PhD was part of the largest collaborative research project between academia and industry through Soil Mix Remediation Technology (SMiRT) project. Dr Abunada has more than 12 years of industrial experience working on civil engineering and construction projects in developing countries. Currently, Dr Abunada is working as a Lecturer at CQUniversity- School of Engineering and Technology, Melbourne. Ziyad's' current research revolves around the core civil and environmental engineering applications including contaminated land, waste management, sustainable water and wastewater management, and engineering for sustainable development. Currently, Ziyad is Co-supervising three Ph.D. students working on various topics including reusing recycled materials in subgrade as and in constructed wetlands for wastewater management, benefit realization in strategic projects as well as lean management practice in the construction industry in developing and developed countries.
In 2017, Dr Abunada’s research was ranked first and awarded the best research prize by ISESCO in the theme of environmental management. He also the recipient of the best paper award during AINAC conference in UAE, 2012. He is currently a member of the Institute of Civil Engineering (ICE) and Royal Society of Chemistry-UK. He is a peer reviewer for many SCI index journals including Hazardous material and the Journal of Environmental Management.
A civil engineering graduate with intensive academic and industrial experience. Dr. Abunada accumulated extensive academic, managerial and technical experience in the fields of civil and environmental engineering. He has advanced university teaching experience (2011—present). His research interests span from core civil engineering applications to engineering for sustainable development and project management. Dr Abunada's current research focuses on the various sustainable applications of the waste materials as well as quality and resource management within the mining industry.
