Dr Alberto Filgueiras is a researcher in psychological sciences with a focus on cognitive neuroscience, mental health, sport and exercise psychology, and cross-cultural psychological testing. He has been conducting quantitative and qualitative research in psychology for more than 15 years, having academic experience in four different countries: Brazil, Canada, the UK and Australia. Now, at CQUniversity, he has a special interest in Cognition and Sports Performance, Exercise and Active Living, Visual Arts and Mental Health.
Dr Filgueiras has an extensive background in research on Psychological Sciences with a versatile portfolio of scientific publications. He authored more than 75 articles in his 15 years of academic career, publishing in renowned journals such as Brain Imaging and Behavior (10.1007/s11682-017-9813-9), Plos One (10.1371/journal.pone.0260465), Frontiers in Psychology (10.3389/fpsyg.2023.1106571), European Psychiatry (10.1016/j.eurpsy.2014.02.003), Journal of Sports Sciences (10.1080/02640414.2024.2433902), BMC Psychology (10.1186/s40359-023-01464-0) and, most recently, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS 10.1073/pnas.2415126122). Most of his research utilises quantitative methods and empirical data to answer practical questions on sports, exercise, clinical, and health psychology; however, he does have a comprehensive understanding of different ontological, epistemological and axiological philosophical stances that lead to other types of research, especially qualitative. He has previous experience conducting and supervising studies utilising Thematic Analysis, Foudauldian Discourse Analysis, Deleuzoguattarian Analysis and Lexical Similarity Analysis.
His academic career started in Brazil, his country of origin; though, he also had previous academic experience in Canada, and the UK before arriving in Australia. He graduated with a Bachelor in Psychology (B.Sc.) at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he also did his Psychologist Training. His Master in Research degree was at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, where he also started his PhD. He concluded his PhD studies as a visiting research student at the Western University, Ontario, Canada before going back to Brazil where he worked for 8 years at the Rio de Janeiro State University. After this period, he started his post-doctorate fellowship at the Catholic University of Brasilia, Brazil, where he obtained a post-doc certificate in Sports Sciences and Physical Education. Then, he became a visiting lecturer at the University of Canberra, staying there for 6 months until he moved to the UK where he lectured a few units in diverse courses at the University of Gloucestershire. It was only then that he saw at CQUniversity the opportunity of a lifetime and decided to move permanently to Australia.
Even though Dr Filgueiras has comprehensive research and academic records, his career started as a practitioner in the areas of Sports and Exercise Psychology and Clinical Psychology, being an accredited psychologist in Brazil, his country of origin, with 18 years of experience under the registration 05/43557 CRP-RJ. As a practitioner, he worked in clinical psychology specialising in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. Nevertheless, most of his work was in sport psychology where he worked in both amateur and professional sports. His extensive work in sports psychology led him to work at the Brazilian Olympic Committee, the youth academy and professional roster of the Flamengo Soccer Club and, most recently, the Octagon Mixed Martial Arts Team.
