About Me

I am a grassroots educator and researcher who avidly embraces:

  • Innovative and inclusive learning and teaching methods
  • Meaningful goal writing and effective outcome measurement
  • Client-centred interprofessional engagement

My clinical practice interests focus on effective and efficient assessment and treatment of cognitive and communication disorders secondary to acquired brain injury.

General
Background

After graduating with a Master's of Clinical Science in Speech-Language Pathology in 1994, I worked in stroke rehabilitation for four years. I returned to school and completed my Master's of Business Administration in 2000 and co-founded what became the largest private speech pathology company in Ontario, Canada. After selling the company, I moved to an academic position in 2017 as Assistant Professor and Director of Clinical Education at McMaster University, the birthplace of evidence-based practice and problem-based learning. During my time at McMaster, I co-developed the problem-based learning program, which was the first problem-based learning program in speech pathology in North America. I was also project co-lead (2018-2019) for the development of the Canadian Assessment of Clinical Competence, a competency-based evaluation for student performance on clinical placement, and then continued as a participant in developing milestones and training materials for this tool (2020-2022). My experience in curriculum design extended to the national level from 2019 to 2021 when I co-developed the new Curriculum Standards for Accreditation of speech pathology programs across Canada. During my tenure at McMaster, I was honoured to receive the university’s highest teaching award in 2021 and I took on the role of Acting Assistant Dean in 2022 during the program director’s research leave. Just prior to joining CQU in 2023, my co-authors, Dr. McKay Moore Sohlberg and Dr. Lyn Turkstra, and I were excited to publish what has become an internationally-acclaimed textbook, "Transforming Cognitive Rehabilitation." Using information from the textbook along with my teaching and research experience, I developed an online course called "Evidence-Based Cognitive Interventions for TBI" for Northern Speech Services, which was released in 2025.
