About Me

I was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland and lived/grew up there through my school years. My family life was steeped in sport. My mother was a member of the GB Olympic Swimming Team in 1952. My father represented Scotland in Water Polo. My brother was the first person in the UK to be awarded the prestigious Ribena Award for swimming 1 mile butterfly continuously - modern butterfly competition maxes out at 200m!  My brother moved to rugby and went on to compete for Scotland at School and University level.

I followed the family swimming background for a while before following my brother into rugby - I ended up representing Scotland at U18 and U21 level and also Scotland Universities. I followed my passion for sport and studied to become a teacher of Physical Education at the Scottish School of Physical Education - which has since morphed into the University of Strathclyde then moved again to the University of Edinburgh.

Injury cut short my rugby career so I went travelling and ended up in New Zealand. I got the bug for research after meeting key academics at the University of Otago. I ended up staying longer than planned and completed my PhD in the School of Physical Education and Department of Physiology. Since then I have 'bounced' back and forth between Scotland, New Zealand, and Australia and have followed a research career in Physical Education > Sports Science > Sports Medicine > Allied Health > Clinical Exercise & Rehabilitation and finally to my current interest in sports Injuries, athlete/player training load, return to play, travel and jet lag.
