About Me

I am a passionate Haematology and Transfusion scientist who has worked within many complex laboratories in both Melbourne, Australia as well as internationally in London, UK. I have always been passionate about training scientists in the laboratory and I bring that passion to my academic teaching here at CQUniversity.

General
Background

I completed a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science at RMIT University in Melbourne and worked for five years in various types of diagnostic laboratories, from complex Haematology, Trauma transfusion and regional hospitals to small core multi-disciplinary laboratories. This variation of laboratories allowed me to gain a good insight into the different aspects of patient demographics as well as the needs of various types of clinical care requirements.

I then moved to London, UK where I lived for four years and worked in two tertiary teaching hospitals and again gained experience from a wider patient demographic as well as complexity of diagnostic testing. Whilst in London, I completed my Masters in Haematology and Transfusion at the University of Westminster. My research was dedicated to the complexity of Haemoglobinopathies and I designed a molecular diagnostic test, which allowed for better clinical care of Sickle cell patients. This diagnostic test, was then incorporated into routine testing at the hospital.

On returning to Australia, I continued to specialise into more complex areas of Haematology, such as Flow cytometry, Molecular Haematology, Haemolgobinopathies and Stem cell transplants.  Following many years of working in these complex areas, I then moved into a Senior scientist role within a complex laboratory with a wide patient demographics, including paediatrics, obstetrics, oncology and organ and stem cell transplants. Again, I developed further skills in training and teaching both scientists and registrars as well as a greater understanding of the skills and attributes required of a graduate scientist.

I bring all of this laboratory, clinical and training knowledge to my role as a Senior Lecturer in Haematology, to continue to support and enhance the field of Medical Science.
