About Me

Dr Carol Keane is a registered psychologist, with area of practice endorsement in clinical psychology, and is a Lecturer in the Master of Clinical Psychology course based at the Nth Rockhampton campus of CQUniversity. Dr Keane obtained her PhD (Clinical Psychology) from the School of Psychology, University of Wollongong in 2019. This body of research involved a person-centred examination of complex trauma in an Australian sample of individuals who were homeless or homelessness vulnerable. Dr Keane's primary clinical/research interests and expertise are in the area of complex trauma, posttraumatic stress, recovery, resilience and growth, and working with those who are vulnerable and disadvantaged. Dr Keane has a particular interest in the use of non-linear dynamic methodology to better understand the complex person-in-environment interactions that influence trauma response and recovery. Additional research interests and experience include health psychology and supporting mental health initiatives for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. Dr Keane also has specific clinical experience working with across the lifespan in the area of sexual abuse and domestic violence. Dr Keane is a current member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS), a Fellow of the APS College of Clinical Psychology, a registered PsyBA board approved supervisor, and she currently holds Honorary Fellow status with the University of Wollongong (2019 - 2022). In her downtime Dr Keane likes to keep very active and can usual be found out and about running, swimming, or cycling.

Professional Interests


· Early intervention for psychological consequence of interpersonal trauma and childhood adversity

· Assessment informed intervention and treatment of complex traumatic stress and potential personality disorder co-morbidity

· Use of clinical, psychometric and neuropsychological assessment instruments to inform treatment planning and to monitor client progress

· Combining group and individual therapeutic approaches for treatment of complex trauma

· Working with socially disadvantaged populations such as the homelessness vulnerable

· Combining use of brief intervention modalities with longer term attachment, interpersonal and psychodynamic approaches for complex trauma presentations

· Application of clinical psychology knowledge and skills into teaching practice and development of educational materials


· Examining the nature and impact of complex trauma in vulnerable populations such as the socially disadvantaged and housing displaced

· How complex traumatic stress reaction vulnerabilities act as a barrier to access and facilitation of social support services – contributing empirical psychological research for policy development

· Substance use and abuse and suicide prevention in the context of traumatic stress

· Longitudinal examination of the psychological, physiological and neurological effects of complex trauma exposure

· Healthy lifestyle choices and implications for psychological recovery – the duality of healthy body and healthy mind

· Teaching and learning strategic development to optimise psychological well-being and academic progression for undergraduate and post-graduate students

· Raising awareness and development of preventative strategies for sexual assault and interpersonal violence in the local community and within educational institutions.

· Experience in use of statistical packages SPSS, Mplus, R and Excel
