Jodie researches, supervises, teaches, and writes in criminal law, international criminal law, legal education, and domestic violence. Her work on juvenile justice has had significant impact - with citations in various parliamentary and law reform reports.

Jodie graduated from High School in Rockhampton, Queensland. She studied an Arts degree at Central Queensland University while working for the Queensland Police in the Communications Room. She went on to study law at Bond University and graduated with first class honours. In practice, she mainly worked for Legal Aid Queensland in Youth Justice. While at Legal Aid Queensland she was selected as an Australian Youth Ambassador for Development to Timor-Leste, which required acting in a capacity-building role in a law firm. Subsequently she completed her Masters in Law with High Distinction and started working full time in academia at Bond University. She started teaching at Central Queensland University in 2019.
