About Me

Dr Rohan de Silva is a lecturer of the School of Engineering and Technology. He has specialised in computer networks and teaches ICT courses at the CQUniversity. Rohan has obtained a PhD and a MEng degree in Electrical and Telecommunications Engineering from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, a ME degree from the Technical University of Berlin, West Germany and a BSc Eng (Hons) degree from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. He is a member of the ICT Program Reference Committee of the School.

Before joining the CQUniversity, Rohan was a tenured lecturer of the School of Information Systems, Technology and Management of UNSW where he was also the MCom Coordinator for some time. He also contributed to curriculum development as a member of the School's curriculum development committee and contributed to ACS accreditation of networking courses that he taught. During his tenure at UNSW, he also spent 6 months of sabbatical leave at universities in Thailand and Sri Lanka. He has been an adjunct lecturer of the School of Computer Science and Engineering of UNSW as well. He has also taught at the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications of UNSW.

Rohan is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). He is also a life member of the Association of Medical Doctors Asia (AMDA) Sri Lankan Chapter.

Rohan has published widely in the areas of data communications as well as application of statistics and data mining to cricket. He has been a paper reviewer, an international program committee member and a session chair of a number of IASTED, WSEAS and IEEE conferences. He was also an organising committee member of the IEEE International Conference on Networking (ICON) 2003 held in Sydney.


His current research interests include UAV networks and application of statistics and data mining to sports, tourism and environmental issues. Rohan invented private UAV Networks and LANs of Drones in 2014 and 2016, respectively, that can be used for agriculture & fisheries, natural disaster and surveillance applications. Rohan pioneered the UAV communications research at CQUniversity Sydney Campus. Together with his colleague, Umapathy Venugopal, he devised a new teaching method called Solution-based Learning method in 2017 that is more appropriate for a certain cohort of students. In 2013, he coined the term 'Leisure Informatics' and started the work in this new field by commencing the Leisure Informatics Society. He defines Leisure Informatics as a new area of specialisation in ICT which deals with gathering, processing, analysing, storage and dissemination of information to facilitate decision making in any area of leisure such as sports & recreation, tourism & hospitality, music & entertainment, and meditation & relaxation using ICT. In 2011, he proved that the famous Duckworth Lewis Method used for target resetting in interrupted limited over cricket matches is incorrect and proposed the Planned Performance Method.
